I have been "getting empowered" by learning to build a wordpress website. The new one is www.enrichmymind.com. And while this site is in its infant stages, I have big dreams to connect with 1500 regular readers or more by 7/28/11. I am sooooo proud that I actually did it myself. Yeah, I know it needs help to be beautified. Design is not my thing but I have enough sense to find someone who has this skill ;d).

Not only did I take a class from Adria over at www.freshworkshops.com to learn how to understand the back-end dashboard and how to install wordpress. But I learned I could go to www.wordpress.org or www. odesk.com to hire a contractor to take it to the next level. Soon I will be hiring a virtual assistant to help manage the site better.

The most important thing about this process has been a reminder that I can still make things happen. Life and all of its routines have the tendency to wear us down and make you think the best you can do is "hold things together" the way they are. When what I am learning does not establish itself tangibly, I start to feeling weak. So here are a few things that will help work against this type of logjam and malaise.

learn something you thought you couldn't learn (like swimming)

exercise 1 time per week more than you planned

take two quiet times for yourself of 5-12 minutes each day

work at whatever you consider " your" work daily

sleep even if it's broken sleep.... get up until you can go back to sleep.

schedule relaxation into your calendar

I said 5 but I think I could go on. What do you do to keep it moving?

Kick Cancer Overboard- Oktoberfest & Networking Event

We're headed to Kick Cancer Overboard's fundraising event tonight at Branches in Long Branch, NJ. Most of the loss I attribute to laying off the snacks. So in my real life, what I did was eat grains, pastas, noodles sea plants and veggies, like I said above. Then by Thursday of this week, I was anxious to have meat and I did--- soba noodles with fresh ginger, garlic, sesame seeds, green onions, carrots, sea weed and a little boiled chicken breast. When I finally went out Saturday night, I had chicken wings, broccoli rabe with garlic and a veggie pizza. A little over load. But I'd thought about what the possibilities at dinner might be and I'd saved my calories all day just in case I couldn't make the best decisions. Bittman doesn't advocate a particular diet or admonish readers to not eat meat for example. To be truthful, he is totally not a dictator. The recipes are well within reach of even an average cook. And what I love is variety is encouraged. So for the first 5 pounds, this is how I am rolling. Any ideas to share about how to lose the next 5?

Rastaman Plant Agave geminiflora-long term commitment to weight loss

Picked up this lovely succulent from Cicconi Farms of Jackson, NJ at the Asbury Park Farmer's Market this morning. They have the best selection of plants. I am going to the farm on Tuesday so more about them with pics soon.

Rastaman is a succulent and can live in either sun or shade. It's a slow growing plant that matures long term. Visually it does - sort of- look like a head full of natty dreads. I just love it in this brown glazed pot. The way this plants grows is the way I am approaching my weight loss. Yes, I am on a mission.

After running into a boat load of people at the dog's end of the beach (that's the far north end should you ever wish to visit and bring your companion), I decided to start Mark Bittman's 7 day meal plan. Just started his book, "Food Matters, A Guide to Conscious Eating." I thought maybe I should be as much about conscious eating as I am about conscious treats ;d).

I like that Bittman's approach toward eating is not rigid and that it is guided by a plan to be kind to both the body and the earth. You can't say he does not have street cred. Because even though he eats out a lot as a professional, he has reportedly managed to lose 35 pounds and he has lowered his cholesterol and blood pressure.

These are my current personal goals. Um hum, 30 pounds will do. In fact 20 will do but I am going for the full gusto. I will share my thoughts on my journey to accomplish this with you in the days to come. For now, you can buy his book (and we can discuss) on Mark's site at http://tinyurl.com/2dgnu6a (paste it in ) or go to your local bricks and mortar bookstore. They will be happy to see you.

If you've already read the book, please leave a comment to let us know how the book or his meal plan affected your life.

Road trip - Tilapia for the masses

Road trip: The origins of tilapia

I went on a great road trip recently with a few of my girlfriends to West Point, NY to visit the family of one in our group and then on to Warwick, Rhode Island simply to eat all the lobster we could consume in a 2 hour period. We had the a GPS system and a couple of Iphones. We did not have need of the Green Book, otherwise known as The Negro Motorist Green Book: An International Travel Guide reviewed in Sunday's NY Times. http://tinyurl.com/3923fu8
We headed north on the Garden State Parkway into NY state and up the Palisades Parkway to West Point which sits on the Hudson River in a majestic, yet bucolic setting. Over the span of the next 40 hours, we ate everything from Camembert and boursin cheese, sourdough bread, vine-ripened tomatoes with fresh mozzarella and basil to fresh strawberries, figs, Jersey peaches; to hummus, wheat chips to paella prepared on a BBQ grill for our late dinner. Early the next day we enjoyed breakfast on the patio of the Thayer Hotel, a faded relic of better times that we learned is soon to be revitalized, it too overlooking the Hudson River. Then around 4:40pm we headed out for a early evening picnic dinner on the grounds of the Boscobel House located on the eastern shore of the Hudson where we sipped a sparkling rose served with crab and salmon sushi followed by a grilled salmon on a bed of spinach and salad greens, no-knead bread made from scratch. Absolutely real shortbread squares, huge blackberries and raspberries were dessert as the curtain went up for the first scene of a sixties revival of the "The Taming of the Shrew." (Thanks to our hostess with the mostest and our trained dessert chef).

I won’t go into everything that was available for breakfast on our last day --- only that my special indulgence was a fried green tomato with white cheese, avocado and salsa on a open-fired grilled corn tortilla. It was delish, as was everything we had. Maybe I should call this a food trip rather than a road trip.

To get to my point, over breakfast, at the Thayer a discussion began about tilapia, its origin and its nutritional value. I cannot recall the exact way the conversation began. But I, in response to another statement, said it was not good to eat farmed fish and definitely not good to eat it more than once per week. I also stated that tilapia was a bred fish suggesting that it didn't occur naturally in nature. This contradicted parts of my friend’s statement that the farming practices of Wegman’s were improving and that she thought it was all right to eat farmed fish. I clung to the opinion that this was not a good idea because in the ponds, the fish eat their own feces and whatever bacteria is in their environment. And that many of the waters in Vietnam and the Far East where the shrimp come from are undeniably polluted. But later I wondered where I had gotten that opinion.

So this morning when I went to Wegman’s, it was early and I had the opportunity to ask the Fish Manager about the origin of Wegman's tilapia. The Manager stated Wegmans does have a sustainable way that it farms it shrimp in Belize and Vietnam. They use a funnel method of aquaculture so that the feces of the fish drains down and can be skimmed from the pond thereby providing fish that are clean, with low level mercury, and primarily vegetarian fed fish. As to my other claim that tilapia is not a real fish, well that is kind of not true and true. Turns out tilapia is the genus for many fish. The Fish Manager described tilapia as the fish that Christ fed to the multitudes. Wikipedia refers to the story of St. Peter’s fish with the schekel in its mouth in Matthew 17. Someone else said it was a perch.

The reality is tilapia farming, according to multiple sources, dates back 4000 years to the Nile. I distinctly remember first hearing about tilapia farming in the Bronx, New York in the 1980's and this is the origin of my belief that tilapia do not occur naturally in nature because they were growing them in the Bronx. Of course that does not mean that these fish are being genetically engineered but it does mean that they are definitely hybridized. I understand now that because of growth in the world's population, aquaculture for tilapia and other fish will continue to grow because of the enormous need to feed the world www.cals.cornell.edu/polson/faawhitepaper.pdf. They are successful aquaculture fish, according to an MIT white paper, because they are hardy and easy to grow, white-fleshed, mild-flavored, and appeal to the palate of consumers. So it's safe to say that we will all be eating more farmed fish and shrimp in the future.

How much tilapia do you eat per week or month? What is your feeling about farmed fish and shrimp? Can you taste a difference?

Swimming: What's trust got to do with it?

Three weeks ago I started taking swimming lessons. And with the hallelujah chorus singing in the background, I am proud to share that I can officially float on my back now. In the past, I was terrified of relaxing into the water. ... afraid water would get into my nose or mouth, that I'd sink to the bottom, that I wouldn't survive. The only thing different this time is I have less fear or perhaps more trust that if swim is what I want to do, I can do it. All the mind games about why this cannot happen have been moved aside just as I have learned to do as I build this business.

Here's Sea Green Live's first product highlighting the benefits of sea greens. In this case, bullwhip kelp from British Columbia is the star. There were incredible women present, most of whom I did not meet (personally) and many of those I did meet were the result of surface interactions. But the exposure to the community of blogging women left me feeling that my time spent was well worth it. I sat with women I did not know, we actually tried to listen to each other without rushing to tell our own story; and the organizers were accessible. When the conference was over on Saturday and I'd danced an hour or so at the Blogalicious community party, I knew that I'd be leaving with five or six new friendships that could go the distance.

No complaints here. It just makes me understand that there's an art to going to conferences.

Life is about the questions you ask

So I am throwing myself back into my blog, even though it is not visually exactamente what I want. I took time off, if you can believe this, because I got over- stimulated from lurking in an on-line community where lots of rapid fire conversation caused me to be uncertain about what I thought I was doing ;0). What I learned from that experience is that a blog is not the business but that the blog drives the business.

To mark this understanding I will be attending the BlogHer 2010 conference in New York City today through Sunday. "BlogHer is a social media conference whose mission it is to create opportunities for blogger women to gain exposure, education, community and economic empowerment. Can't remember how I first got turned on to them but at the same time I learned about them, I learned about Blogalicious, an online community "aimed at celebrating the diversity of women of all ethnicities in social media." So this year, my professional development will include attending both conferences.

The back story is how to make the most of this experience. The wisdom teachers state life is about the questions one asks. So it's not about about what I will get from this investment but how will this experience allow me to share more with others.

I have followed instructions from the 53 page Pre-Conference Guide. But because I am a newbie and was busy in my offline life, I did not RSVP early enough to attend the various parties being sponsored by x, y, and z . Now I am on a waitlist for the parties. I'll be tweeting with birds of a feather and from my own branch. I invite you to follow me on twitter @jzshore

I have got a lot to share ;-)

Well if that is the case, where have I been? There hasn't been much shipping of late because my plan is to develop a new website. I have been unclear that it is worth the effort to migrate what is on this current site to the new site. So I have just been sitting tight. But a few things that will be of interest to you. Last week I visited the Riverside Gardens, a community garden on the grounds of a school in Princeton that is a fabulous asset to the community. I attended a lecture by Will Allen of Growing Power. And I started cleaning my own backyard garden. So bear with me. Changes are coming.

What you need to know before going to your first Twitter meeting

A couple of days ago I went to a book club meeting on Twitter to discuss Seth Godin''s latest book, "Linchpin." This twitter meeting was a first for me. I, like many of my friends, do not yet fully grasp the scope or power of social media. But, I will not be totally left behind by technology. I was told by the organizer that the "hashtag" for the meeting would be sbbc ( for small business book club). Nevermind I didn't know that a pound (#) sign was called a hash tag. So I googled hash tags to learn. With anticipation I logged onto Twitter at 7:58 pm but when I finally found the proper place to insert the hash tag, it was 8:23 pm and the discussion had already begun. I finally made a comment some 30 minutes later just before the close of the hour. I wanted the group to at least know that I had been there even if I was just lurking. But when I made my comment I did not specify to whom my comment was addressed. Of course I didn't know that the proper way to respond was to not blurt my comment INTO the universe but to indicate to whom the comment was addressed by putting a "@" with a name. And because I did not specify to whom the comment was to go it did not show up in the group's discussion. Instead it sat on my twitter home page.

So while the book discussion was a bit off topic, my experience of figuring out how to use this media in real time was a great practice but scary run. Kind of like learning to ski a few years ago. Same principle in that I had to lean into this experience just like leaning into the mountain and fighting against the fear that I might fall. What I got from forging ahead was more confidence, more skill, less fear and the lizard brain got pushed back. I am sure you've had a similar experience in life where what you need to know, you KNOW is within reach. And you are trying to figure out how to get over yourself to access whatever it happens to be.

Here's what I can share with you --- a well written free resource from fellow Third Triber Dave Charest to help you get started: http://caseacecopy.com/blog/twitter-guide-1

Have any funny stories about your first experience on Twitter to share? It is also the question associated with the recipe below in one of my favorite cookbooks. "I am Grateful," by Terces Engelhart with Orchid, is filled with organic, living food recipes and I use it as a point of meditation and to prepare meals even though I am not a vegan. The cookbook reminds me of the absolute place in life for gratitude and the need to educate oneself and trust one's inner knowing. Take this simple recipe on page 46:
Citrus Garlic Dressing
1 cup olive oil
1/2 cup lemon oil
1/4 cup orange juice
2 teaspoons chopped garlic
1 teaspoon salt
Zest of 1/2 orange

The instructions say "taste the dressing for its flavor." So straight-forward yet so complex, just as in life. So on a day like today when I have finally decided that my bricks and mortar beachfront business will not return to its summer location, I am acknowledging that I/Sea Greens Live will be changing. I will move to set up a new website and to grow in a Third Triber way.

I hope that you will stay tuned as I manage this process. I am not sure how we will present. Pretty sure however that it will be more in line with my current intentions and toward my highest. As this is happening, I'd love to know how you handle change.

Art is never defect-free- Being yourself

What an amazing thought. I am still reading Seth Godin's "Linchpin". On page 68 he says "Things that are remarkable never meet spec, because that would make them standardized, not worth talking about."

The reason we are mesmerized by an Esperanza Spaulding, a Picasso or a Bearden painting, Jay-Z, Mos-Def or Miles Davis is that we love that they have found a way to be themselves. The search for perfection cannot be crippling if life is about the journey and the ability to share that trip.

Did you ever think about it this way?

Sharing the Knowledge

When you understand something and you are trying to explain that to someone who doesn't, the key to communicating successfully comes from your understanding that it is neither simple or obvious to that person. A fellow blogger answered a question for me today that was so on target and succinct that a light bulb actually clicked on. In the flash of that light I was reminded of an incident with my Mom when I was 14 and very flip. She asked me to explain fractions to her. She was one of the smartest people I have ever known with an 8th grade education. But I answered her question as though I was taking a test and not as if I intended to share my knowledge with her. I remember her expression. I also remember on that day I learned that real world common sense generally always trumps book knowledge. Michael at Remarkablogger.com explained how one defines their target market in a way that is now sooo obvious that I will be able to move my business forward. Check him out.

Has something ever been right within reach and you couldn't touch it? How did you get past this?

"Go Make Something Happen" said Seth Godin- Part I

So I loved Seth Godin's energy and his look-you-right-in-the eye approach. I am still digesting my takeaways from his lecture/ conversation at the Good Ideas Salon (which by the way was an intimate affair). I am guessing there were 100 - 125 people present but the feeling was up close and personal. Great work Piers of PSFK. Bottom line is my $200 was well spent! I will be nibbling on pieces of Seth's work and sharing as I digest them. One observation is there were women present yesterday but interestingly the room was populated by a majority of men. I am not sure what this says about who is active in this shift from workers and owners to the now third category that includes workers who own their own means of production.
Today I am focusing on Seth's comment that most of us do not "ship" enough work out the door. Yes, I am number one guilty. At 5 a.m. when the first eblasts started on my blackberry, I realize others are working and I don't know what I can say on my blog today that is important. The old lizard brain kicks in shouting loud as ever: NO-THING Patricia. Not one thing. You have nothing to say that matters.
One of Seth's many points is about this irrational fear (of failure or whatever) that comes from the primitive lizard brain which is scared of everything from tigers and lions to people laughing at you.
I am just starting his most new book "Linchpin." Wish I was finished so that I could review it properly. But I have read the entire table of contents and I am anticipating the trip that is about to begin. That is also why I know that facing down the lizard yields results and the post is up.

How do you quiet the lizard brain?

Seth Godin to speak at the Good Ideas Salon and I will be there!!!

So searching, searching the web, I chance upon Seth Godin's name. Somehow it had escaped -- rather than penetrated -- my consciousness why many consider him a guru. I just didn't know why supporters felt this way. Then one day I really see his name on several other established websites and decide to experience Seth's work myself. I subscribe to his feed.

After a couple of weeks of receiving his daily email blast, I notice that his comments are often pithy little stingers that stay with me for much of the day. They actually resonate with me. I mean, one does not have to write a treatise to be meaningful, I conclude. I'd been struggling to figure out how not to talk into my navel, how to talk about the things that are of interest to me, how to find the people who shared some aspects of my interests and consciousness. Quite simply, how to be authentic online.
Then I learn the Good Ideas Salon is hosting an event where Seth Godin will speak on Feb. 4th from 8:30am - 11:30am that costs $200. Now I love the name the " Good Ideas Salon." Its site states "Good Ideas Salons are designed to bring likeminds together to share ideas and positivity around certain subjects. For this intimate event, Seth will present his latest book Linchpin and will openly discuss with the audience their experiences as linchpins at work." What will my takeaway be. It's got to be more than a good feeling. Right.

I decide to pay the $200 to attend this seminar. I will share in a later post what transpires from the standpoint of a Mini-Mogulista who wishes to grow her business. What's more in reading the ingredients for individual tablets, I learned that one ingredient in particular, vitamin E, also known as "dl-alpha-tocopherol," is fully synthetic and the most inexpensive form of vitamin E available. Certainly that is more than I was bargaining for.

Geez is what I am saying by this time. I cannot get a simple answer. Not only do the vitamins not supply the recommended average daily percentages but I can't trust that the quality of the ingredients are bio-dynamic. What is the point.

Four hours later, these are the conclusions generally speaking that I can share with you beginning with the the fact that there is no single multi-vitamin pill that will meet your every need. Take capsules over tablets, verify that what you take is age and gender specific according to your health status because not all vitamins are equal. So perhaps most complexing was I still came away feeling the need to identify an outside source like Consumer Products to grade the source of my vitamins. And I plan to return to the store where I ultimately purchased a replacement for Costco's to speak to their in-house nutritionist.

Boise Natural Health offers a process for choosing a good multiple vitamin and mineral. Supplement Watch is a $25 a year service that will give you scientific product reviews on content such as cholesterol reduction, mood support and energy boost. I can't really attest to the value of this web service personally; but as I monitor the selections I made this month, I will use a service like this to help me make a decision.

I took the Federal Trade Commission's Supplement Savvy test and failed it. I knew I needed help so I headed to Deans whose annual 50% sale on vitamins unfortunately ended Jan10th. With the help of a salesperson I purchased a multi-vitamin (with lutein, CoQ10 and lycopene), NAC 600 (all vegetarian capsules), Coenzyme Q10, and Super Omega-3 (molecularly distilled for purity). These I will take along with the 57 super minerals in tablet form that I purchased Abunda Life, baby aspirin, and calcium citrate. The NAC and CoQ-10 need to be taken twice a day. And that's going to be my regimen to see whether I notice any difference. I will revisit this topic and give readers a little feedback in a month or so. But I am more interested in where you stand on this and how you make your decisions about what to buy.

If you are taking supplements and can share how you went about making your decision, let us know.

The New Year has arrived with a blue moon

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; This catalog has moved from the my living room, to the kitchen, to the bathroom and now it is here beside me in the bedroom. It is a color catalog with a very personable letter from Jere and Emilee , owners of the Baker Creek Heirloom Seed Catalog. I am so stoked by the images that I want to order everything. How does one choose from 7 types of spinach ranging from Giant Noble ( introduced in 1926) to Monstrueux de Viroflay ( a gourmet French heirloom). There are little-known tidbits beside color photos to make you think, such as "The ancient Egyptians esteemed lettuce so highly as to paint it in their tombs." The entire catalog seems designed to make you think. It even has an anecdotal letter (to the owner ) from a man who refers to himself as an Iraqi friend now living in the UK. The Baker Creek Heirloom owner, it seems, traded heirloom seeds with this guy in the 1990's. I know this because the writer expressed nostalgia for the heirloom way of life that was possible in Iraq before the US occupation. Not something you tend to think about when shopping for food. There is even a recipe for butternut curry and lots of seeds for flowers. I just love this catalog because it successfully captures a way of life, from the color photos I have mentioned to the books, flowers and announcements of upcoming Spring festivals.
The one thing I am definitely going to get is a garden planner this year. But what I am wondering is which seed catalog is your favorite for winter reading?

Spider Babies: Good for Asthma

I have a small spider plant in my home that I found after searching several local stores. This used to be a common houseplant one would find in nearly everyone's home. But I had not been able to find one for sometime. At a dinner meeting in my home of a new faith based community group (more about that later) one of the guests asked about my plant. She too had been looking for a spider plant. Now here's to the power of networking: the result of our conversation was that another guest knew someone with a plant that had multiple babies. And today I had the good fortune of harvesting 48 baby spiders that are now beginning a new life in a north window. All of my dinner guests are the proud owners of new spider plants.

They may either be replanted directly to dirt while attached to the primary plant; or restarted the way I have done it, which was to clip and start them in water. The former is the preferred way, so say the professionals. But if the primary plant does not belong to you, as was the case for me, then clippings were the next best option. They will be all right.

As to the benefits of this plant, I read about a woman who keeps her spider plants in her bedroom because her husband suffers from asthma. Spider plants are known to be efficient in cleaning the air. So it makes sense that they might be particularly beneficial to those with breathing or upper respiratory difficulties.

As to growing environments, these plants like humidity and will grow almost anywhere in the home. Mine will be ready to go into the dirt soon. Do you have a great place for growing your spider plants to share?

Today's New York Times carried a story that questioned whether containments in our water were responsible for the increase in breast cancer incidence. Doctors were asked what precautions they took in their own homes to reduce risks. They stated they avoided microwaving food in plastic or putting plastics in the dishwasher because heat possibly caused chemicals to leach out. At the symposium where this discussion took place, organizers handed out a reminder card listing “safer plastics” as those marked (usually at the bottom of a container) 1, 2, 4 or 5.
The writer of this article concludes " that the “plastics to avoid” are those numbered 3, 6 and 7 (unless they are also marked “BPA-free”). I found my way to www.chrisbrogan.com an amazingly high level, chock full of nuts website; and to http://crv.com/team/susan_wu, home to venture capitalist Susan Wu, where I tried to understand how folks in Second Life make money on things that don't exist. Wu focuses on virtual goods and she predicts this coming trend will allow bloggers to monetize things they don't own.

As an example, she identified the "pokes" on Facebook as an easy-to-understand indication of this right along with love and spirituality --- which drove the point home for me.

I get it .... I think. Now that is my question to you. What do you think?

Jessica B. Harris' The Africa Cookbook, a book that includes yam recipes in different configurations. This makes for an easy vegan recipe.

The ingredients I used did not immediately suggest that the taste would come together in a way that is familiar: 2 diced southern yams, 1 small onion, 4 cloves of garlic sauteed together; then add 4 cups of chicken soup for 15 minutes. Toss in 1 drained can of chickpeas with 2 cups of diced zucchini and cook for 15 more minutes. Then add 1/2 cup of rice (I used brown rice) and 2 tablespoons of creamy peanut butter. Oh yes, 1 teaspoon of thyme and 1/2 teaspoon of ground cumin as your spices before adding the chickpeas. The peanut butter give it a distinctly African orientation. But if you are allergic, skip the peanut butter and use vegetable broth instead of chicken broth for the vegan version. You will still be happily surprised by the taste combination. I will be eating this over the winter months and changing it up now that I've basically followed the menu by adding chicken or andouille or whatever is in the refrigerator at the time

If you've made this soup or one like this, please let me know how your recipe differs. I will have it with Spanish tapa chips tonight with a small green organic cucumber and green salad. I adapted this recipe slightly from http://allrecipes.com/recipe/spicy-african-yam-soup/detail.aspx by increasing the yams, garlic.

Tell me if you like it and/or how you make yours.
